The programme

Structured experience—not casual employment.

The J-1 Intern and Trainee categories are cultural-exchange programmes built around a defined learning plan with an approved U.S. host organisation. Hospitality opportunities may include Culinary, Food & Beverage, Front Office and Rooms Division.

Flyo Careers helps you understand the pathway, prepare your profile and coordinate the early stages. A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor is responsible for programme sponsorship and the official J-1 documentation.

Who may qualify

Two routes. One important first check.

J-1 Intern

For current students and recent graduates.

You may fit the Intern category if you are:

Currently enrolled in and actively pursuing a degree or professional certificate at a post-secondary institution outside the United States; or
A graduate of such an institution whose programme begins within 12 months of graduation.

J-1 Trainee

For graduates and experienced professionals.

You may fit the Trainee category if you have:

A degree or professional certificate from a post-secondary institution outside the United States plus at least one year of related work experience outside the U.S.; or
At least five years of related work experience outside the United States.

Final eligibility is assessed by the designated U.S. programme sponsor. This programme is not ordinary employment and cannot be used to fill a regular labour need.

Interview with prospective hosts and complete the sponsor’s screening and training-plan requirements.

Visa and pre-departure
After sponsor approval and receipt of Form DS-2019, prepare the visa application, orientation and practical arrival plan.
